Posted on April 04, 2010 by Lifesaver

JOHOR BARU: Johoreans will have a rare chance to get into the Malaysian Book Of Records by donating blood.

The special blood donation drive aims at breaking the record for the highest number of people to donate blood in a two-day event.

Event organiser, S. Deva said as an incentive, blood donors would also be able to participate in a special lucky draw, which entitles them to a free holiday.

The winners of the special lucky draw will be able to enjoy a three day two nights vacation to Langkawi, Redang and Tioman, he said.

Deva, who is also the Johor Baru MIC youth division chairman, said that the drive was a jointly organised by the division and several governmental bodies.

This is the first time that we are organising such a big event and we are hoping to get at least 2,000 to 3,000 donors to come forward on that day, he said.

He said the event would be held at the Dewan Sri Tebrau on April 3 and 4 from 10am to 6pm.

Other than the donation drive, we will also be providing free health screenings, registration for new organ donors and performances, he said.

Deva added that there would also be a special presentation by the fire department and the police on that day.

Other than that, visitors can also register as voters, view a special exhibition by the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) and enjoy the free food.

We just want people to come forward and do their part for society, he said, adding that the division would also be hosting several sporting and education events in the coming months.

New technique to preserve blood 0

Posted on March 22, 2010 by Lifesaver
The Health Ministry, via the National Blood Bank, has begun implementing a technology to preserve blood reserves for up to 10 years, its minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said.Called the Red Cell Freezing Technology, the new technique puts blood collected through a mixture process with glycerol, which is frozen and kept at -80ËšC.

Blood stored using normal techniques could only last for 35 to 42 days, he said, adding that the bank last year purchased two red cell processors at a cost of about RM120,000 each.

“This technique is useful to ensure that the blood bank will have a secure supply of red cells, particularly from rare blood types,” Liow said.

“With a significantly prolonged lifespan, the bank will have greater flexibility in managing the inventory, especially when there is a shortage of blood,” Liow said after launching a blood donation drive yesterday.

Earlier, Liow who launched the Reduce Sugar Consumption Campaign 2010, said Malaysians were consuming drinks which were too sweet.

“The average sugar intake by Malaysians in their drinks amounts to seven teaspoons or 51 gm, already exceeding recommended levels by the World Health Organisation and the Malaysian Diet Guide, which is not more than 50gm or 10% of the daily energy need,” he said.

Donors rise to the occasion 0

Donating blood is not something unfamiliar to gym instructor Hosni Rahmat, 30, who has done so more than five times. “I believe that it is my responsibility to help others in need. I have noticed that some people often take this matter lightly … not knowing how important it is to do so until they realise that they might need it one day,” said Hosni.

He was among the more than 80 employees of the News Straits Times Press (M) Bhd who donated blood at the Balai Berita here on Thursday. NSTP held the drive in support of the National Blood Centre (NBC).

Properties administration branch officer Aida Karimah Hussain, 45, said she has been donating blood since her early 20s but was still fearful every time she does so.
“I don’t know why I’m still scared,” she said, adding that she would definitely encourage other members of her family to do the same.

For office assistant Muhd Shahril Othman, 24, it was a disappointment because he was not able to donate blood as he did not have enough sleep.

“Each donor must have at least five hours of sleep before they donate their blood. I’ll make sure that I have enough sleep the next time,” he said.

NBC medical officer Dr Norazlina Hamzah said most people did not realise how important it was to donate blood.

“We are trying our best to create awareness by educating people on the importance of doing so. Most people are actually scared of needles and the sight of them … we will ensure them that there is nothing to worry,” she said.

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 15 (Bernama) — Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad is collaborating with the National Blood Bank to overcome the shortage of blood supply by encouraging the public to donate blood at the airports nearest to them.

Give Blood to a Stranger 3000 Kilometer Away 0

Posted on November 18, 2009 by Lifesaver

This is a touching story that I heard during my recent trip to China. The hero is third year university student from China Academy of Fine Art, Miss Mao Chen Bing. I discover this story from her picture which was hanging on a classroom wall at the City University of Wen Zhou, China. She traveled 3000 kilometer away from home, all by herself and without telling her family and her friends, to a remote village to give blood to a woman that she never met. She didnt ask anything in return. After her journey back to her hometown, she told her teachers and friends, because she believe that this what everyone should do. To help others whenever someone need helps.

It happened in September 2007. She found this woman, who was at risk in a rural area in Gui Zhou province, from the internet.  The victim suffered from post-partum hemorrhage and needed blood type of AB with RH negative. Miss Mao borrowed money from student immediately for her travel expenses and started her journey without acknowledge her family. She travelled 1 hour by train, more than 2 hours by aircraft, 11 hours by car to rush to the local hospital to save the womans life, without leaving a name or asking for anything.

Massapequa blood donor closes in on 40 gallons 0

Posted on September 08, 2009 by Lifesaver

Photo credit: Photo by Howard Schnapp | Al Fischer, who is about to donate a pint of blood which will give him a total of 40 gallons donated, in a blood processing lab at Long Island Blood Services on Monday, August 31, 2009 in Westbury, New York.

Good deeds come in different forms: Some people give their time, others donate money.

Al Fischer prefers to give blood.

The print shop operator from Massapequa, affectionately known as Albee, has been donating blood every year since 1951, when Harry S. Truman was in the White House – 11 presidents ago.

So far, Fischer has given 319 pints of blood and he will do it again Tuesday in Woodbury, bringing his lifetime donation to a total of 40 gallons.

“I’m too cheap to give money, so I give blood,” Fischer, 75, said jokingly.

Only one other person in the United States has given more blood, according to a New York Blood Center official – Maurice Wood, 83, a retired federal railroad inspector from St. Louis.

Fischer, who last spoke to Wood a few months ago, said he and Wood are engaged in a friendly rivalry.

“He’s about six or seven pints ahead of me,” said Fischer.

The remarkable thing, said Harvey Schaffler, executive director of Long Island Blood Services, isn’t the fact that Fischer donates blood at his age but that he does it every eight weeks, about six times a year. Fischer donates whole blood, which is then split into three components.

“He’s a one-man army, who has helped almost a thousand people,” said Schaffler, who met Fischer more than two decades ago at a blood drive in Manhattan.

It all started in the summer of 1951 when Fischer, then 17, was visiting relatives in Union, S.C., he said. The First Baptist Church in town was holding a blood drive and Fischer made his first donation.

“It was a breeze and I was helping people,” Fischer said.

Eight weeks later, the church held another blood drive, and Fischer donated his second pint of blood.

And he kept on donating, one pint at a time.

Fischer kept record of his blood donations years before the New York Blood Center started to record blood donation in 1964. Fischer said he received a letter from the Red Cross in 1954 congratulating him for donating a total of 2 gallons, the first of many milestones.

To encourage others to give blood, Fischer got a vanity license plate – “O BLOOD” – as an advertisement.

“The take-away message is that you don’t have to be Al Fischer,” said Schaffler. “You can donate once or twice a year and it will make an impact on the blood supply.”

KUCHING: The Sarawak branch and its Kuching Chapter have made nearly a clean sweep of the top Malaysian Red Crescent Society blood donors awards 2009.Sarawak won in the inter-branch competition, with the highest collection of 30,131 pints of blood last year.

The Kuching Chapter, which collected 17,179 pints, came in top in the inter-chapter contest for the seventh consecutive year.

In the inter-NGOs and business corporations category, the Federation of Kuching and Samarahan Divisions Youth Wing took the top honours. Pensioner Mohamad Idi from Batu Kawa here won in the individual category.

The former police officer has donated 107 pints in the past 40 years.

The award presentation was held in Malacca recently.

Kuching Chapters deputy chairman Dr Chou Chii Ming said the national competition was to encourage all the Red Crescent branches and chapters to campaign relentlessly to ensure adequate blood supply in hospitals nationwide.

He said Kuching had been able to collect a large amount for blood banks thanks to strong support from individuals, youth organisations, religious bodies, government departments, statutory bodies, educational instititions, the armed forces and the police.

This year, our target is 19,000 pints, he added.
